When the Island Casts Its Shadows is the first major retrospective exhibition since the passing of artist Frank Lei, featuring works that encompass the longest span of his career. This exhibition features more than 60 photographic pieces that trace his artistic journey, from his studies in France during the 1990s to his later works after returning to Macau.
As a pioneer of contemporary photography and experimental art in Macau, Frank Lei’s practice was both an exploration of photographic aesthetics and a critical engagement with social realities. Through photography, installation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, he pushed the boundaries of art, capturing the metaphors and poetics of urban development in Macau—an island defined by contradictions and transformation.
Before the advent of digital photography and the overwhelming flood of images, Lei reflected on the function and role of photography in society, as well as the relationship between photographic techniques and image production. He walked and observed, continuing to press the shutter even as moments were predefined, conflicts concealed, and narratives smoothed over.
Roland Barthes stated that photography does not reminisce about the past; rather, it serves as a confirmation and validation of those presences that once existed. The photographer’s gaze stands as a testament to a shared destiny—a symbiosis and demise, a footnote inscribed in history.
The main exhibition hall is located on the ground floor of the Casa Garden and features three rooms that approach the theme from different angles:
Gaze in Alienation

Beginning with the “Deep Night” series from his time in France, this section reveals Lei’s subtle exploration of darkness and solitude. It also showcases panoramic cityscapes of Macau taken after his return, reflecting a sense of alienation in a rapidly changing urban environment.
Texture of Time

Through works from locations such as the Hipódromo and the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards, this section documents landscapes gradually disappearing amid Macau’s social changes. These pieces illustrate Lei’s shift from personal street photography to a focus on social issues and teaching, highlighting his concern for social realities.
Island Songs

This part features a replica of Lei’s “Never-ending Sea” photographic installation and a new piece by artist Joein Leong, incorporating Lei’s wetland slides photography. These seemingly poetic images reveal the “was” of the subjects captured, showcasing Lei’s strong advocacy for nature and local conservation, as well as a deep concern for the coexistence of human and non-human lives.
During the exhibition, two parallel exhibitions will also take place. The first, Roaming Gaze: On the Fringe, is hosted in various local bookstores and cafes, showcasing more of Lei’s “Roaming Gaze” works in spaces such as “Pin-to Livros,” “Júbilo 31 Books,” and others. Some of these locations are neighborhoods frequented by Lei, while others are emerging alternative spaces, guiding audiences to unique corners of the city.
The second parallel exhibition, Artist Bookcase – Frank Lei: Through the Pages, is curated by Alan Ieon at the Dialect Photo Library. It features a newly compiled collection of Lei’s books that reflect his artistic thinking and photographic theories, allowing viewers to delve deeper into his influences and explorations in image creation.
Additional activities include alternative tea stalls, urban photo walks, and cyanotype photography workshops for families, all aimed at continuing Lei’s cross-disciplinary practices and ideals of art dissemination.

The Artistry of Wind Box Community Development Association is dedicated to narrating the history and changes of the city through cultural and artistic language, focusing on excavating, preserving, and showcasing overlooked local culture and artistic creation.
Since Frank Lei’s passing in 2022, the association has actively worked to organize his remaining photographic works and documents, aiming to present these to the public through this exhibition. Although the number of works left by Lei is extensive, they were rarely publicly exhibited during his lifetime, and this exhibition can only display a small portion, hoping to enhance public understanding of this Macau photographer.
When the Island Casts Its Shadows serves as a retrospective of Frank Lei’s artistic career and a reflection on the role of contemporary art in society. His works navigate between poetry and critique, capturing Macau’s unique rhythms while revealing the various human-made destructions amid globalization and urbanization. Through these images, he interrogates the tensions between memory and forgetfulness, nature and development, speaking in a quiet yet resonant voice about the island he has always cherished.
